Burma sentences student to 104 years jail
Last Updated:
A student activist has received a hefty jail term for going to the Thai border to contact an exile group.
Bo Min Yu Ko, believed to be in his early 20s, was sentenced at a Mandalay court to 104 years in prison for what the court said were political activities.
Separately on Wednesday, the ruling military junta freed six out of nine people who had campaigned for the release of pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi last month.
The three others are expected to face legal charges for their activities.
About 270 activists, including monks, student leaders and members of the opposition National League for Democracy, have been handed long jail terms in recent weeks for their roles in anti-junta protests last year and for helping victims of Cyclone Nargis in May.
Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
