Thailand's new prime minister says he will meet human rights officials to discuss recent allegations that the Thai navy set hundreds of asylum-seekers adrift at sea.

Abhisit Vejjajiva says he is aware of the claims concerning migrants from Burma's Rohingya ethnic minority.

Survivors accuse Thai authorities of detaining the migrants after they were washed up on the country's southern coast and then towing them to sea with little food or water.

Thailand's navy has denied the claims.

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
