Tough media censorship in Fiji

Fiji's newly re-appointed military-led government has ordered tougher censorship of the local media.

Our correspondent Sean Dorney reports that the Permanent Secretary for Information Major Neumi Leweni has been given almost total control over what is printed or broadcast in Fiji.

On Friday, Major Neumi Leweni sent his Information Officers, police and soldiers into the newsrooms of the local media here in Suva to check on what stories they were intending to run.

In a letter Major Leweni has informed the local media that they should refrain from publishing and broadcasting any news item that is negative in nature relating to either the President's assumption of executive authority on Good Friday and yesterday's appointment of Commodore Frank Bainimarama as Fiji's Prime Minister for five years.

The penalty under the Emergency Regulations for not obeying may be an order to cease all activities and operations.
