The French Polynesian senator and former president, Gaston Flosse, is set to be formally charged as part of an investigation into corruption.

Mr Flosse has been questioned by investigative judges over the alleged embezzlement of about $US2.2 million from the territory's office of post and telecommunications.

It's expected that he will be formally charged later this week, paving the way for judges to make a third request to have the French senate lift his parliamentary immunity.

Four people, including Mr Flosse's secretary, are already been held in prison as part of the investigation.
