Oil well fire in Timor Sea
Last Updated:
The well at the centre of an oil spill in the Timor Sea off Australia's west coast is on fire.
The West Atlas rig has been leaking oil and gas for more than 10 weeks.
The company responsible PTTEP Australasia has been trying to plug the leak and brought in another rig, the West Triton, to help with its efforts.
The company says it successfully intercepted the hole earlier today, but while trying to fill it with heavy mud the rig and well head platform caught fire.
PTTEP Australasia says all workers are safe and non-essential workers are being evacuated from the nearby West Triton rig.
