Police in the Federated States of Micronesia have arrested a suspect over the fatal stabbing of an American student missionary, on the island of Yap.

Kirsten Elizabeth Wolcott, 20 years old, was found stabbed to death near the school where she was volunteering as a teacher.

Ms Wolcott had been out jogging when the attack occurred last Wednesday.

Representatives from the Adventist Church's Guam-Micronesia Mission are now in Yap to offer their support to the eight other missionaries.

The mission's president, Louis Torres told Radio Australia, they've received a lot of support from the local community.

"The community have responded in a very positive, very supporting way," he said.

"There's outrage and anger that a Yap person could do something like this to someone who gave up their lives to help the people here in Yap."
