An explosion has ripped through a power plant in the U-S state of Connecticut.

A gas pipeline reportedly ruptured and many are feared dead.

Two people are confirmed dead but police say more are missing.

Residents near the Connecticut town of Middletown say the blast was like an earthquake, with a shockwave that damaged nearby homes.

There are reports that it was felt up to 30 kilometres away, with witnesses reporting seeing huge orange flames.

The power plant was still under construction and there are unconfirmed reports that workers were testing a gas line before the explosion.

Over a hundred emergency units have rushed to the scene.

Local Fire and Police officials say there could be mass casualties.
