Inhabitants of French Polynesia's Tubuai island have begun assessing the damage from this weekend's Cyclone Oli.

Electricity, water and telephone connections have been restored across the island.

A ship has also arrived from the main island of Tahiti to deliver essential supplies and building materials.

Another shipment is expected later in the week with building materials to begin rebuilding some of the 200 homes lost in the storm.

One islander - Alain Gylphe has told Pacific Beat that they feel lucky to be alive.

"All the houses all around the island are completely destroyed. The people they have nothing more," he said.

"But there are no injuries because all the people, they were asked to go inside (the island)."
