Police in Papua New Guinea have recaptured the country's most wanted criminal.

Police arrested William Kapris at a lodge in the capital Port Moresby on Saturday after receiving a tip-off.

The National newspaper reports Kapris was armed with a pistol but he offered no resistance.

The 31 year old had been on the run for nearly a month after he and 11 other prisoners escaped from a maximum-security jail.

Police believe he's the mastermind behind a number of high-profile bank robberies and other offences.

The head of PNG's largest bank says he is extremely happy that William Kapris has been recaptured.

Following his escape the Bank South Pacific increased security at all it's branches and offered its own reward for information on Kapris' whereabouts.

The Bank's CEO Ian Clyne says it's a relief he's back in custody.

"Kapris has led at least two very violent kidnappings, rape and bank robberies of BSP staff," he said.

Kapris has been taken back to the same prison he escaped from last month.
