Thailand's government has begun deploying 20,000 police and soldiers ahead of a court ruling on the fortune of fugitive Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The country's Supreme Court will decide whether to allow the state to seize two point $US2 billion in assets belonging to Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin was removed as Prime Minister during a coup in 2006 and has lived overseas since 2008.

He remains a divisive figure in his home country and his supporters have threatened a million strong march for later this month.

The government says between 20 and 35,000 extra police and soldiers will be on the streets to ensure any protests remain peaceful.
