Sri Lanka's military spokesman says former army chief and defeated presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka will face more than five charges under the Army Act.

Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara says the summary of evidence is now complete and has been handed to the commander of the army.

Sarath Fonseka has been held at a naval detention centre since his arrest - two weeks after he was defeated in elections by President Mahinda Rajapakse.

Brigadier Nanayakkara told Radio Australia while at this stage he cannot be specific about the charges, he expects court-martial proceedings to begin shortly.

He said: "I can't tell you exactly because the summary of evidence has been handed over at the weekend. So the army experts are studying it today and probably within the next 48 hours will be able to do the specific charges under the Army Act."

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
