In Sydney, Taronga Zoo's new baby elephant has ventured out under the gaze of the public.

Zoo keepers say the five day old elephant calf is making good progress after a difficult birth.

He was born two days after the zoo initially said he had died during labour.

The zoo's elephant supervisor, Gary Miller, says the new born elephant is still a little unsteady on his feet and is yet to meet the zoo's other, slightly older, baby elephant, Luk Chai.

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
