A major US-South Korean military exercise has ended without incident, despite harsh North Korean criticism of the drill and its threats of retaliation for any aggression.

This year the communist state ordered its military on full alert and even announced a readiness to "blow up" South Korean facilities in event of an attack.

But South Korea says there were no unusual North Korean military movements during the annual exercise.

The North's military is now engaged in its own annual exercise, which began in December and runs until April.
