A former North Korean official has reportedly been executed over his handling of a botched attempt at currency reform.

South Korean media says the former chief of the finance and planning department,Pak Nam-Ki, was executed by firing squad last week.

The official spearheaded last November's currency revaluation.

It was part of the North's efforts to resolve worsening inflation.

But the scheme reportedly lead to widespread panic and unrest as many North Koreans saw their savings wiped out.
