Queenslanders assess cyclone damage

The Premier of the Australian state of Queensland is heading to the state's north to inspect the damage from Cyclone Ului.

As Chris Logan reports, Ului crossed the coast at Airlie Beach as a Category Three cyclone early this morning, but has now been downgraded to a tropical low.

The Premier Anna Bligh says the damage is moderate to severe.

She says many island residents had a rough night.

"Some of them have seen air conditioners sucked out of the walls, that was the force of the winds that came through," she said.

Heavy rain has been falling across the region but Emergency Managment Queensland's Bruce Grady says it could have been worse.

"The early indications are we won't have a major flooding event as a result of this," he said.

It is likely to take several days to assess the damage bill.

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
