British actor and gay rights activist Sir Ian McKellen has attended a rally in Melbourne on a day of protests across the country to campaign for same-sex marriage.
Organisers say thousands of people rallied in most capital cities, calling for the Australian government to pass laws to allow equal marriage rights for all people.
Sir Ian McKellen is a co-founder of the British gay rights campaign group, Stonewall, and addressed the crowd outside the State Library in Melbourne.
